Soultzmatt (German Sulzmatt ) is a French commune with 2,411 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It was the seat of the Communauté de communes de la Vallée Noble , which was dissolved on January 1, 2013. The community is now part of the Communauté de communes de la Région de Guebwiller .

The northwestern village of Wintzfelden also belongs to the municipality, which is why the municipality calls itself Soultzmatt-Wintzfelden .

Soultzmatt is a place on the Alsace Wine Route . Here, at the foot of the site, Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé is 420 m. ü. M. the highest point of the entire wine route.

geography

Soultzmatt is located in the valley of the Ohmbach (also called Vallée Noble ) in the southern Vosges between the cities of Colmar and Guebwiller . The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park . In the southeast, the place borders directly on the village of Westhalten . Other neighboring communities are Osenbach in the northwest and Orschwihr in the south.

history

In the southeast of the municipality, on the banks of the Ohmbach, is the Wagenburg Castle. It was built by the Stör family and later passed to the family of Jakob Körner and Rosina Moyserin. Her only daughter Ursula († 1604) brought the castle into her marriage to Johann Christian von Breitenlandenberg († 1616). Today it is owned by the Ingold family and serves as a winery.

During the First World War , the Romanian military fought alongside the French against Germany. 678 Romanian fallen and deceased prisoners of war from Alsace and Lorraine found their final resting place in Soultzmatt, the largest Romanian military cemetery in France.

economy

The beverage company Lisbeth - Les Sources de Soultzmatt is located in Sulzmatt, selling mineral water and Alsace-Cola made with regional sugar .

Attractions

  • The Gothic Church of St. Sebastian was built from 1309, next to a Romanesque tower that was built around 1130.
  • The town hall (French: Mairie ) of the municipality was built between 1912 and 1914.
  • The Langenstein menhir is dated around 560 BC. Dated.

Soultzmatt's partner municipalities have been Talheim in the German district of Heilbronn since 1965 , Saint-Porchaire in the French department of Charente-Maritime since 1985 and the Belgian municipality of Vresse-sur-Semois in Wallonia since 2011 .
