geography
The municipality of Aspach-le-Bas in the metropolitan region ( Aire urbaine ) Mulhouse is about 15 kilometers west of the city center of Mulhouse at the foot of the Vosges .
The eight square kilometer municipal area extends from the ponds on the outskirts of Cernay over the middle valley of the Doller tributary Baerenbach to the Michelbach and the 80 hectare Michelbach reservoir ( Barrage de Michelbach ), whose eastern end including the dam to Aspach-le-Bas heard.
About 15 percent of the community area is forested ( Kreuzwald and Bruecklenwald in the south and Moenchenwald in the northeast), the vast majority consists of arable land. The highest point of the municipality is reached in the southwest near the Michelbachweiher at 340 meters above sea level. In the north of the municipality, partially flooded ground hollows are reminiscent of former gravel pits.
At Michelbachweiher, the community has a share in the 121 hectare Réserve naturelle régionale du Plan d'eau de Michelbach , founded in 1997 , one of the 13 nature reserves in Alsace.
Neighboring communities of Aspach-le-Bas are Cernay in the north, Schweighouse-Thann in the east, Burnhaupt-le-Haut in the south, Guewenheim in the southwest, Michelbach in the west and Aspach-le-Haut in the northwest.
history
First mentioned in 1105 as Aspa , in 1302 Aspach-le-Bas appears together with Aspach-le-Haut ( Oberaspach ) and the hamlet of Erbenheim, which has now disappeared, as Aspach inferior ( Niederaspach ). In 1324 the village passed from the Counts of Ferrette into the possession of the Habsburgs and was under the jurisdiction of the northwestern city of Thann . Pension payments by Leopold IV to vassals in Aspach-le-Bas have come down to us from 1398 .
In the 18th century there was a break in Aspach-le-Bas on the post road from Strasbourg to Lyon . The Ausspanne was destroyed in the First World War.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War, Aspach-le-Bas belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Thann in the district of Upper Alsace .
Population development
The population of Aspach-le-Bas has more than doubled since the 1960s, which is due to the influx from the nearby city of Mulhouse and the optimal transport connections.
