Westhalten is a French commune with 988 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). She is a member of the Communauté de communes Pays de Rouffach, Vignobles et Châteaux .

Westhalten is located in the center of the Vallée Noble on the edge of the Vosges , south of Colmar .

Neighboring communities are Pfaffenheim in the north, Rouffach in the east, Orschwihr in the south, Soultzmatt in the west and Osenbach in the north-west. The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

history

The name West haulda appears in a document from 1103 . Instead of the name West , the French name Ouest appears in documents . Holding originally means a dump .

In 1788 the residents of Westhalten declared their independence from the rule in Rouffach , in 1818 Westhalten became an independent municipality. From 1871 until the end of the First World War it belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Gebweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .
