Jackson Orr

Jackson Orr (born September 21, 1832 in Washington Court House , Fayette County , Ohio , †  March 15, 1926 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1836, Jackson Orr came to Benton , Elkhart County , Indiana with his parents . There he attended public schools and then Indiana University in Bloomfield . In 1856, Orr moved to Jefferson , Iowa. After studying law, he began working as a lawyer. Between 1861 and 1863 he took part in the civil war as a captain in an infantry unit of the Union Army . He then worked in trade in Boone .

Politically, Orr was a member of the Republican Party . In 1868 he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives. In the congressional election of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Charles Pomeroy on March 4, 1871 . In the following elections in 1872 he then won in the newly created ninth district of Iowa. This enabled him to complete two legislative terms in Congress between March 4, 1871 and March 3, 1875 . In his second term, he was chairman of the Ministry of Interior's Expenditures Control Committee.

In 1874 Orr renounced another candidacy. In 1875 he moved to Silverton , Colorado, where he was a district judge in San Juan County for three years . Then he settled in Denver. There he worked again as a lawyer and in the real estate industry. In 1882, Orr was appointed by US President Chester A. Arthur as one of three negotiators who were supposed to negotiate a peace treaty with the Indians. In 1884 Orr ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the congressional elections. In 1893 and 1894 he served as chairman of the Denver City Fire and Police Committee . After that, he retired. Jackson Orr died on March 15, 1926 in Denver and was buried there.
