Albert R. Anderson

Albert Raney Anderson (born November 8, 1837 in Adams County , Ohio , †  November 17, 1898 in Hot Springs , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his early teens, Albert Anderson moved with his parents to Galesburg , Illinois . There he attended public schools including Knox College . In 1857 he moved to Taylor County , Iowa. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1860, he began to work in Clarinda in his new profession. In 1861, US President Abraham Lincoln appointed him postman for Clarinda. He then took part in the civil war as a soldier in the Union Army . He made it up to his retirement from military service in 1865 to become a lieutenant colonel. He was involved in the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863 and General William T. Sherman's Atlanta campaign in 1864.

After the war, Anderson initially returned to Clarinda, but moved to Sidney , Iowa in 1866 , where he also worked as a lawyer. Between 1868 and 1871, Anderson also worked for the tax authorities in his new home. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , where President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for re-election. From 1876 to 1880 Anderson was a District Attorney and in 1881 Iowa State Railroad Commissioner. In 1882 he ran for the first time, still unsuccessfully, for the Congress .

In 1886, Anderson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as an independent candidate in the eighth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from William Peters Hepburn on March 4, 1887 . Since he was not confirmed two years later, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1889. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Anderson moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota. There he worked as a lawyer. In 1895 and 1896 he was also mayor of that city. He also became a district attorney in the River County case . Albert Anderson died on November 17, 1898 in his new home and was buried in Sidney, Iowa.
