William B. Allison

William Boyd Allison (born March 2, 1829 in Perry , Ohio , † August 4, 1908 in Dubuque , Iowa ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He represented the state of Iowa in the US Senate .

Professional career

Allison attended public schools, the Wooster Academy, and Allegheny College in Meadville . He then studied law at Western Reserve College in Hudson and received his doctorate in 1849. He was admitted to the bar in 1852 and began to work in Ashland . In 1856 he applied unsuccessfully for the post of district attorney. He moved to Dubuque and continued to work there as a lawyer.

During the American Civil War he served as a lieutenant colonel in the Union Army .

Political career

As a member of the Republicans he was elected to the House of Representatives of the 38th Congress on March 4, 1863 , where he could stay for three further conventions until March 3, 1871. From 1869 to 1871 he was committee chairman of the Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury . In 1870 he was no longer available for re-election because he wanted to be elected to the Senate , but he failed. Two years later he made the leap to the Senate and was re-elected five times. He represented the state of Iowa from March 4, 1873 until his death on August 4, 1908. During his tenure, he was active on four committees.

Allison was buried in Linwood Cemetery .
