Ashland (formerly Uniontown ) is a city in Ashland County , Ohio . In Ashland is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) of the county of the same name. In 2010 there were 20,362 residents here. The city is run by Mayor Glen P. Steward and a five-member city council.

What is now Ashland was first settled in 1811. The city was founded in 1815. Originally the settlement was called Uniontown. However, it was renamed in 1846 because there was already a place called Unioncity in Ohio. That year Ashland had 1,300 residents, five churches, sixteen shops, two newspapers, and a private academy that taught both boys and girls. Ashland received city rights in 1916.
Within the next 40 years, Ashland doubled in size and in 1880 had a population of 3004. The parish already owned 4 newspapers, nine churches and two banks by that year. Various industries had settled in Ashland, most of which produced goods that were consumed by the farmers in the area. Ashland is the seat of a university founded in 1879 by the Brethan Church.
In 2000, Ashland was finally the largest parish in Ashland County, with a population of more than 20,000. 40% of Ashland County's residents lived here.
