Hubert Utterback

Hubert Utterback (born June 28, 1880 in Hayesville , Keokuk County , Iowa , † May 12, 1942 in Des Moines , Iowa) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1935 and 1937 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hubert Utterback was born on a farm near Hayesville. He attended his home public schools and Hedrick Normal and Commercial College . He then studied until 1908 at Drake University in Des Moines . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1906, he began to work in Des Moines in his new profession. Between 1908 and 1935 he taught law at Drake University. The same activity he practiced at the same time from 1911 to 1933 at Still Collegein Des Moines. From 1912 to 1914 he was also a judge at the Des Moines Police Court. Between 1915 and 1927 Utterback was a judge in the Iowa Ninth Judicial District. He was also a member of an Iowa State Conference of Social Work . From 1923 to 1925 he was chairman of the Legislative Committee . In addition, Utterback served as an associate judge on the Iowa Supreme Court in 1932 and 1933 .

Utterback was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Iowa . There he took over on January 3, 1935, the successor to the Republican Cassius C. Dowell , whom he had defeated in the election. Since he renounced another candidacy for the House of Representatives in 1936, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1937 . During this time, many of the New Deal laws of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt were discussed and passed in Congress.

In 1936, Utterback ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . Between 1937 and 1940 he was chairman of the Iowa pardons committee. At the same time he was also on the regional board of his party in Iowa. In 1938 he ran again unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. Hubert Utterback died on May 12, 1942 in Des Moines and was buried there. He was the cousin of John G. Utterback , who represented the state of Maine in Congress between 1937 and 1939 .
