S. Addison Oliver

Samuel Addison Oliver (born July 21, 1833 in Washington , Pennsylvania , †  July 7, 1912 in Onawa , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Addison Oliver attended his homeland public schools and the West Alexandria Academy . He then attended Washington College in his hometown of Washington until 1850 . He then moved to Arkansas , where he worked as a teacher for some time. After returning to Pennsylvania, he began working there in agriculture. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1857, he began practicing his new profession in Onawa, Iowa. In 1861 he was in the local Monona County District Administrator ( County Supervivor ). During the Civil War , Oliver served as Provost Marshal in his homeland as head of the military police.

Politically, Oliver was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1863 and 1864 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . In 1864 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , at which President Abraham Lincoln was nominated for re-election. Oliver was a member of the Iowa Senate from 1865 to 1867 . He then served as a judge in the state's fourth judicial district between 1868 and 1875.

In 1874 Addison Oliver was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Jackson Orr on March 4, 1875 . After a re-election in 1876, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . During this time, the reconstruction in the states of the former confederation ended . In 1878, Oliver turned down another candidacy. He returned to Onawa where he worked in agriculture. He was also mayor of this municipality several times. He died there on July 7, 1912.
