Augustus Hall

Augustus Hall (born April 29, 1814 in Batavia , Genesee County , New York , † February 1, 1861 in Bellevue , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1857 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Augustus Hall attended public schools in his homeland. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1836, he began to practice in his new profession in Mount Vernon ( Ohio ). In 1839, Hall became deputy US Marshal; from 1840 to 1842 he was a district attorney in Union County , Ohio. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1844 he moved to Keosauqua , Iowa.

In the congressional election of 1854, Hall was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Bernhart Henn on March 4, 1855 . Since he was defeated by the Republican Samuel Curtis in the next elections in 1856 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1857 , which was overshadowed by the tensions in the run-up to the civil war.

In 1858, Hall was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the Nebraska Territory by US President James Buchanan . He held this office until his death on February 1, 1861 in Bellevue.
