Edward Maurice Mezvinsky (born January 17, 1937 in Ames , Iowa ) is an American politician . Between 1973 and 1977 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Mezvinsky attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Iowa until 1960 . Then he was until 1963 at the University of California at Berkeley , where he studied political science. After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission to the bar in 1965, he began working in his new profession in Iowa City .

Politically, Mezvinsky became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1965 and 1967 he served on the staff of Congressman Neal Edward Smith . Mezvinsky was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives in 1969 and 1970 . In 1972 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Iowa , where he succeeded Republican Fred Schwengel on January 3, 1973 . After re-election in 1974, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1977 . The Watergate affair took place at this time . In the 1976 elections he was defeated by Republican Jim Leach .

Between 1977 and 1979 Mezvinsky was the successor to Allard K. Lowenstein as the American representative at the UN Human Rights Commission . In 1976 he moved to Philadelphia . In 1980 he tried unsuccessfully to be nominated for the US Senate elections . Between 1981 and 1986 he was party chairman of the Democrats in Pennsylvania . In 1990 he unsuccessfully applied for his party's nomination for the office of lieutenant governor . In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Attorney General .

In 2000, he was suspected of fraud. He was sentenced to imprisonment for various crimes related to private business transactions that caused nearly $ 10 million in damage and served until April 2008. Mezvinsky was married from 1975 to 2007 in second marriage to Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky , who was from 1993 to 1995 Congressman for the state of Pennsylvania . The couple raised eleven children, some of whom were adopted.

His son Marc married on 31 July 2010. Chelsea Clinton , daughter of former US President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State of the United States , Hillary Clinton .
