Abby Lea Finkenauer (born December 27, 1988 in Dubuque , Iowa ) is an American politician . She was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018 . Finkenauer is a member of the Democratic Party and represents the first congressional constituency of Iowa. Before that she was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives .

Life

Abby Finkenauer grew up in Dubuque in a working-class family with three siblings and attended high school there . During her school days, Finkenauer Pagin was in the US House of Representatives and in the Iowa House of Representatives. She earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from Drake University . She then worked at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque , a kind of community foundation. At times she was also a member of the board of directors of the Greater Dubuque Development Corporation , an economic development company.

She has been a member of the Iowa House of Representatives since 2012.

politics

Finkenauer was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives for the 99th District in 2014. In 2016 she was re-elected unopposed. At various times there was a member of the committees on transportation , trade , economic growth and administrative supervision. Her term ends in January 2019. In the 2018 US House of Representatives elections , Finkenauer ran against Republican incumbent Rod Blum in the 1st electoral district in Iowa . She prevailed in the democratic primary with 66.9% of the vote against three other applicants. She won the general election with 50.9% against Rod Blum, who received 46%.
