Cassius Clay Dowell (born February 29, 1864 in Summerset , Warren County , Iowa , †  February 4, 1940 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1935 and again from 1937 to 1940 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cassius Dowell was born on a farm near Summerset. He attended his home public schools and the Baptist College in Des Moines and Simpson College in Indianola . He also studied art until 1886 at Drake University in Des Moines. After a subsequent law degree, also at Drake University, and his admission as a lawyer in 1888, he began to practice in Des Moines in his new profession.

Dowell was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1894 and 1898 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives ; from 1902 and 1912 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1914 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the seventh constituency of Iowa, where he succeeded Solomon F. Prouty on March 4, 1915 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1935 . Since 1933 he represented the sixth district. During this time he was chairman of the electoral committee from 1919 to 1923. He was also a member of the road construction committee from 1923 to 1931. The First World War , the Great Depression and the New Deal fell during his time as a congressman . In addition, the 18th , 19th , 20th and 21st amendments to the constitution were discussed and passed.

In the 1934 election, Dowell lost to Hubert Utterback . He then worked again as a lawyer in Des Moines. In 1936 he was able to win back his old mandate and, after being re-elected from January 3, 1937, to remain in Congress until his death on February 4, 1940. During this time, more New Deal laws were passed there. Cassius Dowell died of heart failure and was buried in Des Moines.
