George Washington McCrary, 1879

George Washington McCrary (born August 29, 1835 near Evansville , Indiana , † June 23, 1890 in St. Joseph , Missouri ) was an American politician.

A year after McCrary was born, his family moved from Indiana to the Iowa Territory , where they lived in Van Buren County . McCrary studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1856, and then practiced as a lawyer in Keokuk , Lee County .

He was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1857 to 1860 and a member of the Iowa Senate from 1861 to 1865 . In 1868 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the 41st Congress for the Republican Party . After the successful re-election in the three following congresses, McCrary did not stand for election in 1876. McCrary was a member of the House of Representatives from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1877. From March 12, 1877 to December 11, 1879 he was Secretary of War under President Rutherford B. Hayes . After his resignation, McCrary was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals from 1880 to 1884 .

McCrary died on June 23, 1890 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
