The Van Buren County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 the county had 7,570 people and a population density of 6 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population decreased to 7,436. The county seat is Keosauqua , named after an Indian expression.
geography
The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Iowa and is traversed by the Des Moines River . It borders Missouri to the south and has an area of 1,271 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

Van Buren County was formed on December 7, 1836 from former parts of Des Moines County. It was named after Martin Van Buren (1782–1862), the eighth President of the USA (1837–1841).
In 1837, the first county commissioners' meeting was held in Farmington. In December of that year, the Legislative Assembly of the Wisconsin Territory decided to move the seat of administration to Rochester. This was prevented by a veto by the governor. In 1838, Keosauqua was finally determined as the county seat by means of an electoral decision.
The court and administration building was completed in 1843, making it the oldest in Iowa and the second oldest in the country.

As of the 2010 census , Van Buren County had 7,570 people in 3,098 households. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.39 people each in the 3,098 households.
The racial the population was composed of 98.3 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.2 percent of the population.
24.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.8 percent were 65 years or older. 49.7 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 40,073 USD . The per capita income was $ 20,209. 16.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
