The Fayette County is a county in the US state of Iowa . In 2010 the county had 20,880 residents and a population density of 11 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population had decreased to 20,502. The county seat is West Union .
geography
The county is located in northeast Iowa, about 25 miles north of Minnesota and about 25 miles east of Wisconsin , the border being formed by the Mississippi . It has an area of 1894 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. The following neighboring counties border Fayette County:

Fayette County was formed in 1837 from former parts of Clayton County on what was then Wisconsin Territory . It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834), a French general and politician who went to America in 1777 to fight in the War of Independence and was appointed major general of the Continental Army.

As of the 2010 census , Fayette County had 20,880 people in 8,640 households. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.27 people lived in each of the 8,640 households.
The racial the population was composed of 97.0 percent white, 0.9 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
