Chickasaw County was formed on January 15, 1851 from former parts of Fayette County. It was named after the Chickasaw Indians who used to live in the south .
The first white settlers arrived in 1848 and the first county seat was in Bradford , in the southwest corner of the county , from 1854 . In the spring of 1857 the headquarters were relocated to New Hampton, which was near the geographic center and was then still called the Chickasaw Center . The first necessary county government offices were housed in private homes and the school building. It was not until 1865 that the first courthouse was built, which was expanded in 1876 and completely destroyed by fire on March 26, 1880.
In the American Civil War , Chickasaw County gained national fame through the Chickasaw Souldiers of G Company of the 27th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment .
