The Osceola County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 6,462 people and a population density of 6.3 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Sibley , named after General GH Sibley of Minnesota .

Osceola County was formed in 1871 from former parts of Woodbury County. It was named after a chief of the Seminoles, Osceola .

It is the smallest and youngest county in Iowa. In the same year the first settler, Captain Eldred Huff, came and staked out his claim. On January 1, 1872, the county government met for the first time. The first wooden courthouse was built in November of the following year and also served as a meeting room, school and church.

The second courthouse was completed in September 1903 and supplied with electricity in October 1915. The Osceola County Courthouse is the county's only structure on the National Register of Historic Places .

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census , Osceola County had 6,462 people in 2,724 households. The population density was 6.3 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 95.2 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.7 percent of the population.

Statistically, 2.38 people lived in the 2,724 households.

23.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.7 percent were 65 years or older. 49.8 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was 43,889  USD . The per capita income was $ 23,063. 8.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
