Cass County was formed on January 15, 1851 from parts of Pottawattamie County. It was named after Lewis Cass (1782–1866), a former Secretary of War (1831–1836), US Senator (1845–1848, 1849–1857) and Secretary of State (1857–1860).
The first whites in this area were probably Mormons looking for a new home in the west. About 20 families spent the winter of 1846–1847 here. Some families stayed until 1851. The first white settler to settle here was Vincent M. Conrad with his wife and child. He built a log house and opened the first trading shop in 1854. His home later served as a postal office and he was made a Cass County tax officer.
The next permanent settler was Jeremiah Bradshaw, who settled on the site of what is now Cold Springs in 1851. He became postmaster there, opened a hotel and a horse changing station, and did a variety of county administration tasks.
