history
Muscatine County was formed on December 7, 1836 from former parts of Des Moines County. It was named after Muscatine Island in the Mississippi.
In 1833, Colonel George Davenport of Illinois sent three representatives to the territory to set up a trading post. These were probably the first whites to live here permanently. In the same year, James W. Casey and John Vanatta came to the area. On June 1, 1833, they opened a supply depot called Casey's Woodpile for steamers. The first official land sale began in November 1838 at $ 1.25 an acre, and construction of the courthouse and prison began a year later.
On December 23, 1864, this courthouse was completely destroyed by fire and in the following two years a new one was built in the same place. The construction of the courthouse, which is still in use today, began on September 26, 1907.
26 of the county's structures and sites are on the National Register of Historic Places .
