history

Boone County was formed in February 1847 from territory that was designated as free - but actually populated by Indians . It was named after Captain Nathan Boone , son of Daniel Boone .

After it was first administered from Polk County, citizens decided to set up their own jurisdiction, elect a legislative assembly, and set up their own administration.

By 1871, the division of the county into 17 townships and their boundaries that still exist today had been completed.

After court hearings in the county were first held in private or school houses, a new courthouse was built in 1857. In 1868 a larger building was erected; the current building was completed in 1918.
