The county is located in eastern Iowa and is approximately 20 km west and northwest of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois .

It has an area of ​​1507 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. The county is traversed by the Cedar River of the same name , which belongs to the Mississippi River basin across the Iowa River .

Cedar County was formed on December 21, 1837 from former parts of Dubuque County. It was named after the Cedar River.

In 1840 the town of Tipton, now the county seat, was founded.

Before the Civil War , the area around West Branch was an important base for the Underground Railroad , a network for the liberation of slaves from the southern states.

Former US President Herbert Hoover (1874–1964) was born in West Branch in Cedar County.

According to the 2010 census , Cedar County had 18,499 people in 7,558 households. The population density was 12.3 people per square kilometer. In the 7558 households there were statistically 2.36 people each.
