The Mahaska County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 22,381 residents and a population density of 15.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Oskaloosa , named after the wife of the Indian chief Osceola.
geography
The county is located in southeastern Iowa and is traversed by the Des Moines River . It has an area of 1,485 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. The following counties border Mahaska County:

history
Mahaska County was formed on February 17, 1843 on former Indian land. It was named after Mahaska (1784-1834), a chief of the Iowa Indian people .
It has been under self-administration since February 5, 1844. The county was the first in Iowa to have a sheriff and a magistrate.
The first courthouse was completed in January 1846. The second was opened on February 27, 1886. The first school, a small wooden hut about 2 km east of Oskaloosa, opened on September 16, 1844 and in 1846 the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was built as the first church . On July 2, 1850, the first edition of the Iowa Herald , now the Oskaloosa Herald, appeared and in 1864 the first rails were laid by the Des Moines Valley Railroad through the county.
46 of the county's structures and sites are on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2010 census , Mahaska County had 22,381 people in 8,932 households. The population density was 15.1 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 95.7 percent white, 1.1 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 1.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.6 percent of the population.
Statistically, 2.40 people lived in each of the 8,932 households.
24.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.1 percent were 65 years or older. 49.7 percent of the population were female.
The median income for a household was 45,021 USD . The per capita income was $ 22,027. 13.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
