By 2013 the population had decreased to 33,252. The county seat is Knoxville , named after Henry Knox , a general in the American Revolutionary War and first US Secretary of War.

Marion County is located in south-central Iowa and covers an area of ​​1,478 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water. It is approximately 70 km from the border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the south .

history

Marion County was formed in 1845 from former parts of Washington County in what was then the Iowa Territory . It was named after Francis Marion (1732–1795), a general in the American War of Independence .
