The Marion County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 , the county had 33,309 residents and a population density of 23.2 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population had decreased to 33,252. The county seat is Knoxville , named after Henry Knox , a general in the American Revolutionary War and first US Secretary of War.

Marion County is located in south-central Iowa and covers an area of 1,478 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water. It is approximately 70 km from the border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the south .
The county is traversed by the Des Moines River , which is dammed in the center to Red Rock Lake .

history
Marion County was formed in 1845 from former parts of Washington County in what was then the Iowa Territory . It was named after Francis Marion (1732–1795), a general in the American War of Independence .
