In 1847, Pella was founded by 800 Dutch immigrants. The name of the place is based on the ancient Pella in the Jordan Valley, the place of refuge for Christians from the first Christians .

Pella was at times the home of the adventurer Wyatt Earp , whose family owned a farm here.

In 1868 the settlement was incorporated as an independent municipality.
