The Lucas County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 8,898 people and a population density of 8 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Chariton , named after the Chariton River .

The county is located in southern Iowa, about 25 miles from Missouri , and covers an area of 1,124 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history
Lucas County was formed in 1846 from former parts of Monroe County. It was named after Robert Lucas (1781-1853), a governor of Ohio (1832-1836) and later territorial governor of Iowa (1838-1841).

The Sacred Heart Church in Chariton is the only Catholic church in Lucas County. It belongs to the Diocese of Des Moines .
