The Ringgold County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 , the county had 5,131 people and a population density of 3.7 people per square kilometer. By 2015 the population decreased to 5068. The county seat is Mount Ayr .

The county is located in southwest Iowa, in the headwaters of the Grand River , a left tributary of the Missouri .

To the south, Ringgold County borders the state of Missouri ; it has an area of ​​1396 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water.

Ringgold County was formed on February 24, 1847. It was named after Major Samuel B. Ringgold (1796–1846), a hero in the Mexican War .

In 1855 its own administration was set up. A year later, a wooden court and administrative building was built, but it was destroyed by a storm.

In 1859 a new, larger building made of better wood was built and served for 25 years.

In 1884 a larger brick building was erected that could be used until 1921. Since the building had meanwhile become dilapidated, the administration moved into a temporary arrangement until 1927 the house, which is still used today, was occupied.

According to the 2010 census , Ringgold County had 5,131 people in 2,047 households. The population density was 3.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.42 people each in the 2047 households.

The racial the population in 2015 was composed of 97.5 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American and 0.3 percent Asian; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 52.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 23.6 percent were 65 years or older. 51.4 percent of the population were female.

The median income for a household was 2,014 at 44,032  USD . The per capita income was $ 24,553. 16.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
