history

Decatur

Decatur County was formed in 1846 from former parts of Appanoose County. It was named after Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), a hero in the war of 1812 .

The administration was established in 1850. In 1853 the administrative seat was established and relocated to Independence. Because there was already a town in Buchanan County called Independence, the name of the administrative center was changed to South Independence. In 1855 it was renamed Leon, as the city is still called today.

The first court and administration building was a log cabin and was built in 1851. After only a few years it was already too small and a new one had to be built. This was destroyed by the wind during construction. The next building burned down in 1874.

In 1875 a brick building was built to offer more resistance to wind and fire. However, burglars stole the contents of the safe in 1877, but they could be retrieved.

In 1905 the citizens decided on a new building. Built in 1908 from iron, brick, marble and granite, this building was fire and burglarproof and is still in operation today.
