history

Frémont

Fremont County was formed in 1847 from former parts of Pottawattamie County. It was named after John C. Frémont (1813-1890), an officer, explorer and later governor of the Arizona Territory .

A separate administration was established in 1850 in Austin, which no longer exists today. A separate court and administration building was not built. Trials took place on the premises of general store owner A. H. Argyle .

The administrative headquarters were moved to Dayton in 1851, which was renamed Sydney in the same year. In 1858 the county's first courthouse was built. In 1863 the building was damaged by an explosion, the cause of which could not be determined. In addition to a number of other theories, there is a presumption that guerrillas of the Confederate perpetrated this attack.

In 1888 it was decided to build a new courthouse. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

A total of 9 buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places.
