Davis County was formed in 1843 from former parts of Van Buren County. It was named after Garrett Davis (1801–1872), a member of the US House of Representatives (1839–1847) and later US Senator from Kentucky (1861–1872).
The city of Bloomfield was chosen as the administrative seat from the start. The first courthouse was a two-story log cabin and was completed in 1844. As the building was very difficult to repair, it was finally abandoned in 1851. For the next 27 years, the county government offices were housed in separate buildings in Bloomfield.
In August 1877 the foundation stone was laid for a new court and administration building, which is still in use today.
In June 2002 Davis County celebrated the 125th anniversary of the building.
