The county is located a few kilometers southwest of the geographic center of Iowa in the western suburbs of Iowa's capital Des Moines and is traversed in the northeast by the Des Moines River . Dallas

Dallas County was formed on January 13, 1846 from former parts of Polk County. It was named after George Mifflin Dallas (1792–1864), the eleventh Vice President of the USA (1845–1849).
