history

Montgomery

The area of what is now Montgomery County was acquired by the Potawatomi Indian tribe in 1846 and was then part of Potawatami County. In 1851 the Montgomery County was spun off from this, which was named after Richard Montgomery (1738-1775), a general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence , which fell in 1775 in the Battle of Québec .

Elections were held for the first time in the county in 1853, but this was initially co-administered by Adams County. A separate administrative seat was established, which was in the middle of the county and was named after the city of Frankfort , Kentucky .

The first court and administration building was erected there in 1857. It was a simple wooden house measuring 12 by 6 meters. After a competition between Frankfort and Red Oak , the seat was moved to Red Oak. The old courthouse was moved from Frankfort to Red Oak by ox carts.

The building was no longer able to cope with the growing tasks. There were two failed attempts in 1873 and 1883 to erect a new building there. It was not until 1889 that a decision was made to erect a new building, which was handed over to its intended purpose a year later and is still in use today. The sandstone and red brick building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

In 1984 the building was modernized; Elevators have been installed and access for the handicapped has been created.

A total of 15 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
