The Appanoose County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 , the county had 12,887 residents and a population density of 10 people per square kilometer. By 2013, the population had decreased to 12,692. The county seat is Centerville .
geography
The county is located in southern Iowa and borders Missouri to the south . It has an area of 1337 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water.
Appanoose County is traversed by the Chariton River , a left tributary of the Missouri . In the north of the county, the Chariton River is dammed through the Rathbun Dam to Rathbun Lake .

history
Appanoose County was formed from designated free territory on February 17, 1843. It was named after Appanoose, a chief of the Fox Indians who did not take part in the Black Hawk War .
Today's district capital was formerly called Chaldea . Later she was named in honor of the former governor Senter of Tennessee renamed Senterville. Gradually Senterville became Centerville.
In April 1848, the $ 160 courthouse was put into operation and served as such until 1857. The second courthouse opened in 1864 and burned down to the lower floor due to exploding fireworks during the July 4th celebrations. The third courthouse opened on May 21, 1903 and is still in use today.
