The Keokuk County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 10,511 people and a population density of 7 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Sigourney .
geography
The county is located in southeastern Iowa, about 70 km to the south from Missouri , about 80 km to the east from Illinois , and covers an area of 1,502 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Keokuk County was formed in 1837 from former parts of Washington County in what was then Wisconsin Territory . It was named after Keokuk (1767-1848), a chief of the Sac - Indians , who in the Black Hawk War advocated peace with the white settlers.
In May 1843, the county was officially released for settlement by white immigrants and self-administered from 1844. It was previously under the administration of Washington County . After several years of fighting for the privilege of becoming the district capital, it became Sigourney in 1856.
