The Shelby County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 , the county had 12,167 people and a population density of 7.9 people per square kilometer. By 2014 the population had decreased to 11,948. The county seat is Harlan , named after James Harlan , a former US Senator and Secretary of the Interior .
geography
The county is located in eastern Iowa, about 45 km to the east from the Missouri River , which forms the border with Nebraska . It has an area of 1532 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water.
The Shelby County is traversed from north to south by the West Nishnabotna River , which is part of the Mississippi River basin via the Nishnabotna River and the Missouri .

The Shelby County was formed on January 15, 1851 as the original county. It was named after General Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), a hero in the American Revolutionary War and first governor of Kentucky (1792-1796, 1812-1816).
On February 4, 1855, Shelbyville was established as the county seat. In April 1859 it became Harlan. A year later the first courthouse was built. In 1898 the construction of the second courthouse, this time made of stone and three stories, was commissioned and completed in 1892. In 1978 the building was completely renovated and still serves as a courthouse today.

According to the 2010 census , Shelby County had 12,167 people in 5,070 households. The population density was 7.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.37 people lived in 5070 households.
The racial the population was composed of 97.9 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
23.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 55.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 20.9 percent were 65 years or older. 51.2 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 44,085 USD . The per capita income was $ 22,389. 10.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
