Harlan is a small town (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Shelby County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 Harlan had 5,106 inhabitants, the number of which increased slightly to 5,013 by 2013.

Harlan is located in western Iowa on the West Nishnabotna River , which is part of the Mississippi River basin over the Nishnabotna River and the Missouri .

US Highway 59 , which runs in a north-south direction, runs through the west of the urban area of Harlan and crosses Iowa Highway 44 at the level of downtown . All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.

Harlan was laid out according to plan in 1858. The place was named after James Harlan , a former US Senator and US Secretary of the Interior . In 1859, Harlan was established as the administrative seat of Shelby County. The city was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1879.
