The county is near the geographic center of Iowa and covers an area of 1,486 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water.
The county is traversed from north to south by the southern headwaters of the Skunk River , a right tributary of the Mississippi .

Story County was formed on January 13, 1846. It was named after Joseph Story (1779-1845), a judge of the Supreme Court of the United States (US Supreme Court).
The first white settlers came from Indiana , New York, and Pennsylvania . Norwegians, Germans and Danes followed later. In 1852 there were 214 residents in the county, in 1860 there were already 4501. On June 27, 1853, Nevada was elected the district capital. The first railway connection took place in 1864.

The racial the population was composed of 88.6 percent white, 2.5 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 6.0 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.0 percent of the population.
