Story City is located in the center of Iowa on the South Skunk River , which is part of the Mississippi River basin across the Skunk River . This forms the border with Illinois around 250 km east , while the Missouri River forms the border with Nebraska around 250 km west . The Iowa- Minnesota border runs about 160 km north; Missouri's northern border is approximately 190 km south.
