In 1883, north of Sheldahl, a junction of two railway lines of the former railway companies North Western and Milwaukee Road was built . A train station with the name Sheldahl Crossing was built and a settlement was formed around it. In the years that followed, many Sheldahl residents moved to the new settlement, which had been renamed after former landowner Michael Slater . In 1890 the place was incorporated as an independent municipality.
