Nevada is located in the center of Iowa on West Indian Creek , which is part of the Mississippi river basin via Indian Creek , South Skunk River and Skunk River . This forms the border with Illinois around 250 km east , while the Missouri River forms the border with Nebraska around 250 km west . The Iowa- Minnesota border runs about 180 km north; Missouri's northern border is 180 km south.

The four-lane US Highway 30 runs in a west-east direction through the south of the urban area of Nevada. The Iowa Highway 930 leads in parallel to US 30 through the center of the city. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A freight line of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) runs through the metropolitan area of Nevada and runs from the Mississippi to Omaha. From this another line branches off from the same company in the direction of Des Moines.
With the Ames Municipal Airport is located 18 km to the west a small airfield for general aviation and air taxi traffic . The nearest commercial airport is Des Moines International Airport, 70 km south-southwest .

Nevada was created in 1853 and named after the Sierra Nevada in California . A year later a post office was opened here.
In 1855, the first Story County's Justice and Administration Building was opened in Nevada. After the building burned down, it was replaced by a similar building. After the requirements overwhelmed the building, the third building was built for this purpose in 1877. A modern building was erected in 1968 as a joint judicial and administrative building. In 2002, the new Story County Justice Center was built for the judiciary , while the previous courthouse has since been used as the Story County Administration Building exclusively for the county administration.

According to the 2010 census , Nevada had 6,798 people in 2,761 households. The population density was 516.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 2761 households there were statistically 2.38 people each.
The racial the population was composed of 94.3 percent white, 1.3 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 1.0 percent Asian and 1.7 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 3.4 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years or older. 51.4 percent of the population were female.
