John Scott (born April 14, 1824 in Jefferson County , Ohio , †  September 23, 1903 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1868 and 1870 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa.

Career

John Scott attended Franklin College in New Athens until 1841 . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1845, he began to work in this profession. In the meantime he worked as a teacher in Ohio and Kentucky . During the Mexican-American War he was a soldier in a volunteer unit from Kentucky. In the meantime, he was imprisoned for eight months. After the war, he published a newspaper in Kentucky. He also worked again as a teacher in Owingsville . In the fall of 1856, he came to Nevada , Iowa, where he practiced as a lawyer while working in agriculture and real estate.

Politically, Scott joined the Republican Party . He served in the Iowa Senate between 1859 and 1861 . During the civil war he served in the army of the Union , in which he rose to the rank of colonel. In 1868 he was elected lieutenant governor of Iowa alongside Samuel Merrill . He held this office between 1868 and 1870. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After that he worked for the tax authority. In 1885 he was re-elected to the Iowa Senate. He was a member and chairman of several associations in his state. John Scott died in Des Moines on September 23, 1903.
