Edward J. McManus

Edward Joseph "Nick" McManus (born February 9, 1920 in Keokuk , Iowa ; † March 20, 2017 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa) was an American politician and lawyer . Between 1959 and 1961 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa; then he became a federal judge .

Career

Edward McManus graduated from the University of Iowa in 1940 . After completing a law degree at the same university, he was admitted to the bar in 1942. During World War II , he served as an officer in the United States Navy Air Corps between 1942 and 1946 . He then practiced as a lawyer in Keokuk. From 1946 to 1955 he was also the legal representative of this city. He also headed the Keokuk-based Coca Cola Botteling Company from 1955 to 1962 .

Politically, McManus joined the Democratic Party . Between 1955 and 1959 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . In 1958 he was elected lieutenant governor of Iowa alongside Herschel C. Loveless . He held this office between 1959 and 1961. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1960 he ran unsuccessfully for governor. Between 1962 and 1985, McManus was Chief Justice of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. That appointment required his move from Keokuk to Cedar Rapids . In 1985 he retired.
