Gregg then ran for the office of Attorney General , but in the November 2014 election he was defeated by Democratic incumbent Tom Miller . On December 8, 2014, Gregg was promoted to Public Defender of the State of Iowa by Governor Branstad. After Branstad's resignation in May 2017, then Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds became head of the state government. Because it was unclear to what extent Reynolds had powers to appoint a lieutenant governor and to avoid legal action, Adam Gregg was not promoted to lieutenant governor, but instead was given all the powers of a lieutenant governor. Gregg resigned from his post as Public Defender and was succeeded by Larry Johnson.

In the gubernatorial elections in November 2018 , Kim Reynolds was confirmed in office with 50.26 percent of the vote and Adam Gregg was now officially elected lieutenant governor. He officially took office on January 18, 2019. He is the first male lieutenant governor in Iowa since Robert T. Anderson's tenure ended in 1987.
