William H. Nicholas

William H. Nicholas (born October 10, 1892 in Bristow , Butler County , Iowa , †  August 13, 1984 in Mason City , Iowa) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1953 and again from 1957 to 1959 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa.

Career

William Nicholas graduated from Bristow High School and the State Teachers Institute in Cedar Falls . He then worked as a teacher in Butler County between 1910 and 1915. Between 1916 and 1924 he was employed as a recorder for the local district administration. This period was interrupted by his time in the United States Navy during the First World War . There he was deployed in the Great Lakes area. Later he worked in agriculture. There he mainly raised turkeys. He also worked in Florida with the cultivation of citrus fruits.

Politically, Nicholas was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1946 and 1948 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . For four years he was a member of his state's motorway commission; he was also a commissioner for the Great Mississippi River Road . He was also a member of the Iowa Development Commission . In 1950, Nicholas was elected Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, alongside William S. Beardsley . He held this office between 1951 and 1953. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He held the same office again between 1957 and 1959. This time he served under Governor Herschel C. Loveless . During his time as lieutenant governor, he represented his state at many official events.

After the end of his tenure as Lieutenant Governor, he continued his previous activities. He died on August 13, 1984 in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County .
