Benjamin F. Gue (born December 25, 1828 in Greene County , New York , †  June 1, 1904 in Polk County , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1866 and 1868 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa.

Career

Benjamin Gue grew up on a farm in his New York homeland, known as the Underground Railroad station, which served as a stopover for slaves who had fled the south . From his youth, Gue was an opponent of slavery . He lost his father at the age of ten. Together with his mother and younger brothers, he continued to run the farm. The mother also provided her children with an adequate education. In the spring of 1852, Benjamin Gue and one of his brothers came to Scott County , Iowa, where they set up a new farm. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In February 1856 he was a founding member of that party for Iowa. Between 1858 and 1862 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Iowa ; from 1862 to 1866 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1864 Gue was also active in the newspaper business. At that time he was the editor of the Fort Dodge newspaper Iowa North West . This newspaper was close to the Republican Party.

In 1865, Gue was elected Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, alongside William M. Stone . He held this office between 1866 and 1868. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After that he continued to work in the newspaper industry. From 1872 he lived in Des Moines . Between 1872 and 1880 he was federal pension commissioner for the states of Iowa and Nebraska . After that he continued to work in the newspaper business. He and his son bought The Homestead , a Des Moines newspaper , for which he had previously worked. He also wrote a four-volume treatise on the history of Iowa. He died on June 1, 1904. Since 1855 he was married to Elizabeth Parker, who died in 1888, with whom he had four children.
