Joy Corning (born September 7, 1932 in Bridgewater , Adair County , Iowa , † May 20, 2017 in Urbandale , Iowa) was an American politician . Between 1991 and 1999 she was Lieutenant Governor of the state of Iowa.

Career

Joy Corning graduated from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls . She then embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . She became a member of the Cedar Falls City Education Committee and the Iowa Senate . Between 1981 and 1984 she headed the Iowa Housing Finance Authority .

In 1990, Corning was elected lieutenant governor of Iowa alongside Terry E. Branstad . She held this office after being re-elected between 1991 and 1999. She was Deputy Governor . She was the first female lieutenant governor of the state of Iowa who was not also chairman of the state senate. Since 1991 these two offices have been separated following a constitutional reform.

In 1998, Joy Corning initially ran for governor of Iowa. For financial reasons, she broke off this candidacy during the Republican primary. Within her party, her political stance is considered to be moderate to liberal. She was a board member of Planned Parenthood in Iowa, who supported abortion rights and advocated more rights for homosexuals.
