Joshua G. Newbold

Joshua G. Newbold (born May 12, 1830 in Fayette County , Pennsylvania , † June 10, 1903 in Mount Pleasant , Iowa ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1877 to 1878 the 10th governor of the state of Iowa.

Early years

Joshua Newbold attended local schools in his home in Pennsylvania. In 1854 he moved to Iowa where he worked as both a farmer and a trader. During the American Civil War he fought as a captain in the Union Army. Among other things, he was involved in the siege of the city of Vicksburg .

Political Promotion and Governor of Iowa

After his military service, Newbold began a political career. He was a member of the Republican Party and represented it between 1872 and 1876 in the House of Representatives from Iowa . In 1876 he was elected as his party's candidate for the new lieutenant governor of his state. After the incumbent Governor Samuel Jordan Kirkwood resigned from office on February 1 to move to the US Senate , Newbold had to end the remaining term of office as governor. This term of office ran from February 1, 1877 to January 17, 1878. During this time it was his aim to reduce the national debt and to reform the tax legislation.

Another résumé

After the end of his governorship, Newbold returned to his private business. His only and last political office after his governorship was that of Mayor of Mount Pleasant. He held this office from 1899 until his death in 1903. He had five children with his wife, Rachel Farquhar.
