Daniel Webster Turner (born March 17, 1877 in Corning , Adams County , Iowa , † April 15, 1969 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1931 to 1933 the 25th governor of the state of Iowa.

Early years

Daniel Turner attended the Corning Academy until 1898 . He then took part in the Spanish-American War of 1898. In this war he was used in the Philippines until 1899 . After his military service, he worked in agriculture and trade. Between 1904 and 1909 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . He did not appear politically for the next 20 years. It was not until 1930 that he was elected as the Republican candidate for the new governor of his state.

Governor of Iowa

Daniel Turner took up his new office on January 15, 1931. His entire two-year term in office was overshadowed by the global economic crisis. In this context, he advocated tax reform. In addition, the minimum wages for teachers should be lowered in order to relieve the budget. Turbulent clashes erupted in agriculture after an epidemic of tuberculosis broke out in cattle . This epidemic worsened the situation of the farmers, who were already hard hit by the economic crisis. They resisted the necessary veterinary examinations and the governor had no choice but to mobilize the National Guard to protect the veterinarians during the examinations. Despite all these incidents, Turner stood for re-election in 1932, which he lost to the Democrat Clyde L. Herring . Thus, for the first time since 1890, a democrat was elected governor of this state.

Further life

In 1934, Turner tried again unsuccessfully for a return to the office of governor. During the Second World War he was from 1942 to 1945 member of the Production Board in Washington . In 1955 he helped found the National Farmers Association , an association of American farmers. He died in 1969 at the age of 92. He had three children with his wife Alice Sample.
