Chet Culver

Chester John "Chet" Culver (born January 25, 1966 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician and former governor of the state of Iowa . He belongs to the Democratic Party .

Culver is the son of former US Senator John Culver , who represented the state in Congress from 1975 to 1981 . He attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland . Upon graduation, Culver attended the college of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg , Virginia .

From 1999 to 2007 he was Secretary of State of Iowa. He won the gubernatorial election on November 7, 2006 against Republican Jim Nussle . After four years in office, he ran for re-election in November 2010, but with a share of only 43.3 percent of the vote, he was defeated by former governor Terry E. Branstad , who replaced Culver on January 14, 2011, returning to office after twelve years.
