Buren Robinson Sherman (born May 28, 1836 in Phelps , Ontario County , New York , † November 4, 1904 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1882 to 1886 the 12th governor of the state of Iowa .

Early years

Buren Sherman attended local schools in his home in New York State. Then he began an apprenticeship in the jewelry trade. He did not work in this profession, however, instead he decided to study law after moving to Iowa in 1855. After his exams and his admission to the bar in 1859, he began working in his new profession in the city of Vinton . During the civil war he served in the army of the Union until he had to give up military service in 1863 because of an injury.

In 1865 Sherman became a district judge in Benton County . He held this office until 1866. After that he was secretary of the court for four years. Between 1874 and 1881 he was a State Auditor for Iowa.

Governor of Iowa

In 1881, Sherman was elected the new governor of his state. He took up his new office on January 12, 1882. After re-election in 1883, he could remain in office until January 14, 1886. During this time, several new administrative departments were created in Iowa, including the Veterinary Office and the Employment Office. A prohibition law was passed and a tax reform was carried out.

After his governorship ended, Sherman withdrew from politics and devoted himself to his private interests. He was then still active in a Masonic lodge. Buren Sherman died in November 1904. He was buried in Vinton. Governor Sherman had two children with his wife, Lenda Kendall.
